Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)
Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)
Labour Market Impact Assessment is a process through which Canadian employers demonstrate the need to hire a foreign worker to fill a job position temporarily. It’s managed by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) to ensure that hiring a foreign worker won’t negatively impact the Canadian labour market. Employers must show that they’ve attempted to recruit Canadians for the job before seeking to hire a foreign worker. If approved, the employer receives a positive LMIA, allowing the foreign worker to apply for a work permit to work in Canada. LMIAs are essential for employers seeking to hire temporary foreign workers and are aimed at protecting the interests of Canadian workers and the labour market.
